Chapter 12: Bhakti Yoga
Path of Devotion
Arjuna asks which devotee is more perfect — one who worships the personal form or the unmanifest Absolute. Krishna says both reach Him, but the path of the unmanifest is harder for embodied beings. He then offers a ladder anyone can climb: fix your mind on Me; if you cannot, practise; if you cannot practise, work for Me; if even that is beyond you, surrender the fruits of your actions. The chapter closes with a portrait of the devotee dear to God — free of malice, friendly, compassionate, patient, content.

अर्जुन उवाच । एवं सततयुक्ता ये भक्तास्त्वां पर्युपासते । ये चाप्यक्षरमव्यक्तं तेषां के योगवित्तमाः ॥
arjuna uvāca evaṁ satata-yuktā ye bhaktās tvāṁ paryupāsate ye cāpy akṣaram avyaktaṁ teṣāṁ ke yoga-vittamāḥ
Arjuna said: Between those who are ever steadfastly devoted to Your personal form and those who worship the imperishable, unmanifest Absolute, whom do You consider most perfect in yoga?
Life lesson: If you're unsure which path is right for you today, it's okay to simply ask rather than pretend to already know.

But those who worship the imperishable, the indefinable, the unmanifest, the all-pervading, the unthinkable, the unchanging, the immovable, the eternal—
Life lesson: If the idea of a formless, vast truth resonates with you more than a personal image of God, that path is honored too.

For those whose minds are attached to the unmanifest, the path is one of greater difficulty, for the goal of the unmanifest is hard to reach for embodied beings.
