Royal Knowledge, Royal Secret
Krishna calls this the sovereign science and the sovereign secret — direct, joyful, and immediately practicable. He pervades the entire universe while remaining unattached to it. Devotion here is opened to everyone: whatever one's birth or past, the path is available. The most tender verse of the chapter asks for almost nothing — a leaf, a flower, a fruit, water — offered with love, and says He accepts it. He is equal to all beings, yet present in those who are present to Him.

Verse 9.1
श्रीभगवानुवाच । इदं तु ते गुह्यतमं प्रवक्ष्याम्यनसूयवे । ज्ञानं विज्ञानसहितं यज्ज्ञात्वा मोक्ष्यसेऽशुभात् ॥
śrī bhagavān uvāca. idaṁ tu te guhyatamaṁ pravakṣyāmy anasūyave, jñānaṁ vijñānasahitaṁ yaj jñātvā mokṣyase'śubhāt.
The Supreme Lord said: To you, who are free of envy, I shall now declare this most secret knowledge together with realization, knowing which you shall be freed from misfortune.

राजविद्या राजगुह्यं पवित्रमिदमुत्तमम् । प्रत्यक्षावगमं धर्म्यं सुसुखं कर्तुमव्ययम् ॥
rāja-vidyā rāja-guhyaṁ pavitram idam uttamam pratyakṣāvagamaṁ dharmyaṁ su-sukhaṁ kartum avyayam
This is the king of knowledge, the king of secrets, the purest and highest, directly realizable, in accordance with dharma, easy to practice, and imperishable.
Life lesson: Approach your spiritual practice today as something joyful and easy rather than another burdensome task on your list.

अश्रद्दधानाः पुरुषा धर्मस्यास्य परन्तप । अप्राप्य मां निवर्तन्ते मृत्युसंसारवर्त्मनि ॥
aśraddadhānāḥ puruṣā dharmasyāsya parantapa, aprāpya māṁ nivartante mṛtyusaṁsāravartmani.
O scorcher of foes, those without faith in this teaching do not attain Me, and return again to the path of death and rebirth.
Life lesson: Give today's good practice a genuine chance by trusting it, rather than doubting it before you've truly tried.

मया ततमिदं सर्वं जगदव्यक्तमूर्तिना । मत्स्थानि सर्वभूतानि न चाहं तेष्ववस्थितः ॥
mayā tatam idaṁ sarvaṁ jagad avyakta-mūrtinā mat-sthāni sarva-bhūtāni na cāhaṁ teṣv avasthitaḥ
By Me, in My unmanifest form, this entire universe is pervaded. All beings dwell in Me, but I do not dwell in them.
Life lesson: Whatever weighs on you today, remember you are held within something far larger than the struggle itself.

न च मत्स्थानि भूतानि पश्य मे योगमैश्वरम् । भूतभृन्न च भूतस्थो ममात्मा भूतभावनः ॥
na ca matsthāni bhūtāni paśya me yogam aiśvaram, bhūtabhṛn na ca bhūtastho mamātmā bhūtabhāvanaḥ.
Nor do beings truly dwell in Me—behold My divine mystery; even as the sustainer of beings, My Self does not dwell in them, though I bring them into being.
Life lesson: Try supporting someone today without needing to hold onto or control the outcome—give freely, like this.

यथाऽऽकाशस्थितो नित्यं वायुः सर्वत्रगो महान् । तथा सर्वाणि भूतानि मत्स्थानीत्युपधारय ॥
yathākāśasthito nityaṁ vāyuḥ sarvatrago mahān, tathā sarvāṇi bhūtāni matsthānīty upadhāraya.
Just as the mighty wind, moving everywhere, always rests in space, know that in the same way all beings rest in Me.
Life lesson: When you feel small today, remember you rest within something vast and steady, like wind within space.

सर्वभूतानि कौन्तेय प्रकृतिं यान्ति मामिकाम् । कल्पक्षये पुनस्तानि कल्पादौ विसृजाम्यहम् ॥
sarvabhūtāni kaunteya prakṛtiṁ yānti māmikām, kalpakṣaye punas tāni kalpādau visṛjāmy aham.
O son of Kunti, at the end of a cosmic cycle, all beings merge into My nature; and at the beginning of the next cycle, I send them forth again.
Life lesson: Trust that whatever ends today is quietly making room for something new to begin.

प्रकृतिं स्वामवष्टभ्य विसृजामि पुनः पुनः । भूतग्राममिमं कृत्स्नमवशं प्रकृतेर्वशात् ॥
prakṛtiṁ svām avaṣṭabhya visṛjāmi punaḥ punaḥ, bhūtagrāmam imaṁ kṛtsnam avaśaṁ prakṛter vaśāt.
Resting upon My own nature, I send forth again and again this entire multitude of beings, who are helpless, under the control of nature.
Life lesson: When today's outcomes feel out of your hands, soften into trust rather than forcing control.

न च मां तानि कर्माणि निबध्नन्ति धनञ्जय । उदासीनवदासीनमसक्तं तेषु कर्मसु ॥
na ca māṁ tāni karmāṇi nibadhnanti dhanañjaya, udāsīnavad āsīnam asaktaṁ teṣu karmasu.
O Dhananjaya, those actions do not bind Me, for I remain seated as if indifferent, unattached to those actions.
Life lesson: Do your work fully today, but practice staying a little less entangled in how it turns out.

मयाऽध्यक्षेण प्रकृतिः सूयते सचराचरम् । हेतुनाऽनेन कौन्तेय जगद्विपरिवर्तते ॥
mayādhyakṣeṇa prakṛtiḥ sūyate sacarācaram, hetunānena kaunteya jagad viparivartate.
O son of Kunti, under My supervision, nature gives birth to all things, moving and unmoving; because of this, the universe continues to revolve.
Life lesson: Trust that there's an underlying order even in today's chaos, quietly holding things together.

अवजानन्ति मां मूढा मानुषीं तनुमाश्रितम् । परं भावमजानन्तो मम भूतमहेश्वरम् ॥
avajānanti māṁ mūḍhā mānuṣīṁ tanum āśritam, paraṁ bhāvam ajānanto mama bhūtamaheśvaram.
Fools disregard Me when I take on a human form, not knowing My higher nature as the great Lord of all beings.
Life lesson: Look for the depth behind ordinary appearances today, in others and in yourself.

मोघाशा मोघकर्माणो मोघज्ञाना विचेतसः । राक्षसीमासुरीं चैव प्रकृतिं मोहिनीं श्रिताः ॥
moghāśā moghakarmāṇo moghajñānā vicetasaḥ, rākṣasīm āsurīṁ caiva prakṛtiṁ mohinīṁ śritāḥ.
Their hopes are in vain, their actions are in vain, their knowledge is in vain, and their minds are bewildered—they take refuge in a delusive, demonic, and fiendish nature.
Life lesson: Check today whether your effort is rooted in truth or illusion—the foundation matters more than the energy spent.

महात्मानस्तु मां पार्थ दैवीं प्रकृतिमाश्रिताः । भजन्त्यनन्यमनसो ज्ञात्वा भूतादिमव्ययम् ॥
mahātmānas tu māṁ pārtha daivīṁ prakṛtim āśritāḥ, bhajanty ananyamanaso jñātvā bhūtādim avyayam.
But great souls, O Partha, taking refuge in the divine nature, worship Me with undivided mind, knowing Me as the imperishable source of all beings.
Life lesson: Bring your whole, undivided heart to whatever you devote yourself to today.

सततं कीर्तयन्तो मां यतन्तश्च दृढव्रताः । नमस्यन्तश्च मां भक्त्या नित्ययुक्ता उपासते ॥
satataṁ kīrtayanto māṁ yatantaś ca dṛḍha-vratāḥ namasyantaś ca māṁ bhaktyā nitya-yuktā upāsate
Constantly glorifying Me, striving with firm resolve, and bowing to Me with devotion, they worship Me, ever united in yoga.
Life lesson: Return to your practice with quiet steadiness today, even briefly — devotion grows from repetition, not grand gestures.

ज्ञानयज्ञेन चाप्यन्ये यजन्तो मामुपासते । एकत्वेन पृथक्त्वेन बहुधा विश्वतोमुखम् ॥
jñānayajñena cāpy anye yajanto mām upāsate, ekatvena pṛthaktvena bahudhā viśvatomukham.
Others, sacrificing through the sacrifice of knowledge, worship Me as one, as distinct, or in various ways, as the being facing all directions.
Life lesson: Respect today that others may seek truth differently than you do—sincerity matters more than the exact form.

अहं क्रतुरहं यज्ञः स्वधाऽहमहमौषधम् । मन्त्रोऽहमहमेवाज्यमहमग्निरहं हुतम् ॥
ahaṁ kratur ahaṁ yajñaḥ svadhāham aham auṣadham, mantro'ham aham evājyam aham agnir ahaṁ hutam.
I am the ritual, I am the sacrifice, I am the offering to ancestors, I am the healing herb; I am the sacred chant, I am the clarified butter, I am the fire, and I am the act of offering.
Life lesson: Treat even the small details of today's tasks as meaningful—the whole is present in every part.

पिताऽहमस्य जगतो माता धाता पितामहः । वेद्यं पवित्रमोंकार ऋक्साम यजुरेव च ॥
pitāham asya jagato mātā dhātā pitāmahaḥ, vedyaṁ pavitram oṁkāra ṛk sāma yajur eva ca.
I am the father of this universe, the mother, the supporter, and the grandfather; I am what is to be known, the sacred syllable Om, and the Rig, Sama, and Yajur Vedas.
Life lesson: Let today's relationships reflect a bit of that same boundless care—as parent, friend, or guide to someone.

गतिर्भर्ता प्रभुः साक्षी निवासः शरणं सुहृत् । प्रभवः प्रलयः स्थानं निधानं बीजमव्ययम् ॥
gatir bhartā prabhuḥ sākṣī nivāsaḥ śaraṇaṁ suhṛt, prabhavaḥ pralayaḥ sthānaṁ nidhānaṁ bījam avyayam.
I am the goal, the sustainer, the master, the witness, the abode, the refuge, and the friend; I am the origin, the dissolution, the foundation, the resting place, and the imperishable seed.
Life lesson: When you're searching for support today, remember it can be found in the same place you seek meaning.

तपाम्यहमहं वर्षं निगृह्णाम्युत्सृजामि च । अमृतं चैव मृत्युश्च सदसच्चाहमर्जुन ॥
tapāmy aham ahaṁ varṣaṁ nigṛhṇāmy utsṛjāmi ca, amṛtaṁ caiva mṛtyuś ca sadasac cāham arjuna.
O Arjuna, I give heat, I withhold and send forth rain; I am immortality and also death; I am being and non-being.
Life lesson: Accept both the good and hard parts of today as belonging to the same larger, meaningful whole.

त्रैविद्या मां सोमपाः पूतपापा यज्ञैरिष्ट्वा स्वर्गतिं प्रार्थयन्ते । ते पुण्यमासाद्य सुरेन्द्रलोकमश्नन्ति दिव्यान्दिवि देवभोगान् ॥
traividyā māṁ somapāḥ pūtapāpā yajñair iṣṭvā svargatiṁ prārthayante, te puṇyam āsādya surendralokam aśnanti divyān divi devabhogān.
Knowers of the three Vedas, drinkers of the Soma juice, purified of sin, worship Me with sacrifices and pray for passage to heaven; attaining the pure world of Indra, they enjoy the divine pleasures of the gods.
Life lesson: Reflect today on what your good actions are truly aimed at—a passing reward, or something lasting.

ते तं भुक्त्वा स्वर्गलोकं विशालं क्षीणे पुण्ये मर्त्यलोकं विशन्ति । एवं त्रयीधर्ममनुप्रपन्ना गतागतं कामकामा लभन्ते ॥
te taṁ bhuktvā svargalokaṁ viśālaṁ kṣīṇe puṇye martyalokaṁ viśanti, evaṁ trayīdharmam anuprapannā gatāgataṁ kāmakāmā labhante.
Having enjoyed that vast heavenly world, when their merit is exhausted, they enter the world of mortals again; thus, following the rites of the three Vedas and desiring pleasures, they obtain only repeated coming and going.
Life lesson: Ask today whether you're aiming for something that lasts, or just another pleasure that will fade.

अनन्याश्चिन्तयन्तो मां ये जनाः पर्युपासते
ananyāś cintayanto māṁ ye janāḥ paryupāsate
To those who are exclusively devoted to Me, always united with Me in mind, I secure what they lack and preserve what they have.
Life lesson: When you feel like you're carrying everything alone, remember: sincere effort is never unseen or unsupported.

येऽप्यन्यदेवता भक्ता यजन्ते श्रद्धयाऽन्विताः । तेऽपि मामेव कौन्तेय यजन्त्यविधिपूर्वकम् ॥
ye'py anyadevatā bhaktā yajante śraddhayānvitāḥ, te'pi mām eva kaunteya yajanty avidhipūrvakam.
O son of Kunti, even those devotees who, endowed with faith, worship other deities, worship Me alone, though not according to the proper understanding.
Life lesson: Trust that sincere effort today, even if imperfect, still moves you toward the same truth others are seeking.

अहं हि सर्वयज्ञानां भोक्ता च प्रभुरेव च । न तु मामभिजानन्ति तत्त्वेनातश्च्यवन्ति ते ॥
ahaṁ hi sarvayajñānāṁ bhoktā ca prabhur eva ca, na tu mām abhijānanti tattvenātaś cyavanti te.
For I alone am the enjoyer and the true lord of all sacrifices; but they do not know Me in essence, and so they fall away.
Life lesson: Look for the deeper understanding behind today's practices, not just the outward form.

यान्ति देवव्रता देवान्पितॄन्यान्ति पितृव्रताः । भूतानि यान्ति भूतेज्या यान्ति मद्याजिनोऽपि माम् ॥
yānti devavratā devān pitṝn yānti pitṛvratāḥ, bhūtāni yānti bhūtejyā yānti madyājino'pi mām.
Worshippers of the gods go to the gods, worshippers of the ancestors go to the ancestors, worshippers of spirits go to the spirits, and My worshippers come to Me.
Life lesson: Choose today where you place your deepest focus and devotion—it shapes where your life eventually leads.

पत्रं पुष्पं फलं तोयं यो मे भक्त्या प्रयच्छति
patraṁ puṣpaṁ phalaṁ toyaṁ yo me bhaktyā prayacchati
Whoever offers Me a leaf, a flower, fruit or water with love and devotion, I accept that offering from the pure-hearted.
Life lesson: You don't need a grand gesture to express love or gratitude today — a small, sincere one is enough.

यत्करोषि यदश्नासि यज्जुहोषि ददासि यत् । यत्तपस्यसि कौन्तेय तत्कुरुष्व मदर्पणम् ॥
yat karoṣi yad aśnāsi yaj juhoṣi dadāsi yat yat tapasyasi kaunteya tat kuruṣva mad-arpaṇam
Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer or give away, whatever austerities you perform — O Kaunteya, do it as an offering to Me.
Life lesson: Turn one ordinary act today — a meal, a task, a small kindness — into a quiet offering, and notice how it transforms.

शुभाशुभफलैरेवं मोक्ष्यसे कर्मबन्धनैः । संन्यासयोगयुक्तात्मा विमुक्तो मामुपैष्यसि ॥
śubhāśubhaphalair evaṁ mokṣyase karmabandhanaiḥ, sannyāsayogayuktātmā vimukto mām upaiṣyasi.
Thus, you shall be freed from the bondage of actions, whether their fruits are good or bad; with your mind united in the Yoga of renunciation, liberated, you shall come to Me.
Life lesson: Offer today's actions, both successes and setbacks, without letting either one bind you too tightly.

समोऽहं सर्वभूतेषु न मे द्वेष्योऽस्ति न प्रियः । ये भजन्ति तु मां भक्त्या मयि ते तेषु चाप्यहम् ॥
samo 'haṁ sarva-bhūteṣu na me dveṣyo 'sti na priyaḥ ye bhajanti tu māṁ bhaktyā mayi te teṣu cāpy aham
I am equal to all beings; none is hateful or dear to Me. But those who worship Me with devotion dwell in Me, and I dwell in them.
Life lesson: Reach out sincerely today, in prayer or in life — the invitation to be close is always open to you, no exceptions.

अपि चेत्सुदुराचारो भजते मामनन्यभाक् । साधुरेव स मन्तव्यः सम्यग्व्यवसितो हि सः ॥
api cet su-durācāro bhajate mām ananya-bhāk sādhur eva sa mantavyaḥ samyag vyavasito hi saḥ
Even if one of very poor conduct worships Me with exclusive devotion, they should be considered righteous, for they have resolved rightly.
Life lesson: Whatever mistakes are behind you, know that today's sincere turn toward goodness counts fully, starting right now.

क्षिप्रं भवति धर्मात्मा शश्वच्छान्तिं निगच्छति । कौन्तेय प्रतिजानीहि न मे भक्तः प्रणश्यति ॥
kṣipraṁ bhavati dharmātmā śaśvac chāntiṁ nigacchati kaunteya pratijānīhi na me bhaktaḥ praṇaśyati
Quickly they become righteous and attain lasting peace; O son of Kunti, declare boldly that My devotee never perishes.
Life lesson: Trust boldly today that sincere effort toward what's good in you is never wasted, even when progress feels invisible.

मां हि पार्थ व्यपाश्रित्य येऽपि स्युः पापयोनयः । स्त्रियो वैश्यास्तथा शूद्रास्तेऽपि यान्ति परां गतिम् ॥
māṁ hi pārtha vyapāśritya ye'pi syuḥ pāpayonayaḥ, striyo vaiśyās tathā śūdrās te'pi yānti parāṁ gatim.
O Partha, taking refuge in Me, even those of humble or difficult birth, women, merchants, and laborers, also attain the supreme goal.
Life lesson: Remember today that no background disqualifies anyone, including you, from a sincere spiritual path.

किं पुनर्ब्राह्मणाः पुण्या भक्ता राजर्षयस्तथा । अनित्यमसुखं लोकमिमं प्राप्य भजस्व माम् ॥
kiṁ punar brāhmaṇāḥ puṇyā bhaktā rājarṣayas tathā, anityam asukhaṁ lokam imaṁ prāpya bhajasva mām.
How much more, then, should virtuous priests and devoted saintly kings attain it; having obtained this impermanent and joyless world, worship Me.
Life lesson: Let today's fleeting struggles remind you to invest in something that truly lasts.

मन्मना भव मद्भक्तो मद्याजी मां नमस्कुरु । मामेवैष्यसि युक्त्वैवमात्मानं मत्परायणः ॥
man-manā bhava mad-bhakto mad-yājī māṁ namaskuru mām evaiṣyasi yuktvaivam ātmānaṁ mat-parāyaṇaḥ
Fix your mind on Me, be devoted to Me, worship Me, and bow to Me. Having thus united yourself to Me and made Me your goal, you will surely come to Me.
Life lesson: Keep it simple today — a few quiet moments of turning your mind and heart toward what matters most is practice enough.
