Chapter 10: Vibhuti Yoga
Divine Glories
Arjuna asks Krishna to describe His divine manifestations, and the chapter becomes a litany of glory: among the Adityas, Vishnu; among lights, the radiant sun; among words, the single syllable Om; among mountains, Meru; among rivers, the Ganga; among seasons, spring. The point is not the list but its ending — whatever is glorious, beautiful or powerful anywhere springs from a fragment of His splendour, and He sustains the whole universe with a single portion of Himself.

Verse 10.1
श्रीभगवानुवाच । भूय एव महाबाहो शृणु मे परमं वचः । यत्तेऽहं प्रीयमाणाय वक्ष्यामि हितकाम्यया ॥
śrī bhagavān uvāca. bhūya eva mahābāho śṛṇu me paramaṁ vacaḥ, yat te'haṁ prīyamāṇāya vakṣyāmi hitakāmyayā.
The Supreme Lord said: Listen again, O mighty-armed one, to My supreme word, which I shall speak to you, who are dear to Me, desiring your welfare.

न मे विदुः सुरगणाः प्रभवं न महर्षयः । अहमादिर्हि देवानां महर्षीणां च सर्वशः ॥
na me viduḥ sura-gaṇāḥ prabhavaṁ na maharṣayaḥ aham ādir hi devānāṁ maharṣīṇāṁ ca sarvaśaḥ
Neither the hosts of gods nor the great sages know My origin, for I am the source of the gods and the great sages in every way.
Life lesson: It's okay if some big questions today don't have neat answers — some things are meant to be approached with wonder, not full comprehension.

yo mām ajam anādiṁ ca vetti lokamaheśvaram, asammūḍhaḥ sa martyeṣu sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate.
One who knows Me as unborn, beginningless, and the great Lord of the worlds, that undeluded person among mortals is freed from all sins.

बुद्धिर्ज्ञानमसम्मोहः क्षमा सत्यं दमः शमः । सुखं दुःखं भवोऽभावो भयं चाभयमेव च ॥
buddhir jñānam asammohaḥ kṣamā satyaṁ damaḥ śamaḥ, sukhaṁ duḥkhaṁ bhavo'bhāvo bhayaṁ cābhayam eva ca.
Intelligence, knowledge, freedom from delusion, patience, truthfulness, control of the senses, calmness of mind, pleasure, pain, birth, death, fear, and fearlessness.
Life lesson: Accept today's full range of feelings, knowing even they arise from the same deep source as your strengths.

अहिंसा समता तुष्टिस्तपो दानं यशोऽयशः । भवन्ति भावा भूतानां मत्त एव पृथग्विधाः ॥
ahiṁsā samatā tuṣṭis tapo dānaṁ yaśo'yaśaḥ, bhavanti bhāvā bhūtānāṁ matta eva pṛthagvidhāḥ.
Non-violence, equanimity, contentment, austerity, charity, fame, and infamy—all these various qualities of beings arise from Me alone.
Life lesson: When you practice kindness or contentment today, know you're touching something larger than yourself.

महर्षयः सप्त पूर्वे चत्वारो मनवस्तथा । मद्भावा मानसा जाता येषां लोक इमाः प्रजाः ॥
maharṣayaḥ sapta pūrve catvāro manavas tathā, madbhāvā mānasā jātā yeṣāṁ loka imāḥ prajāḥ.
The seven great sages of old, and also the four Manus, whose nature partakes of Mine, were born from My mind; from them come these creatures in the world.

एतां विभूतिं योगं च मम यो वेत्ति तत्त्वतः । सोऽविकम्पेन योगेन युज्यते नात्र संशयः ॥
etāṁ vibhūtiṁ yogaṁ ca mama yo vetti tattvataḥ, so'vikampena yogena yujyate nātra saṁśayaḥ.
One who truly knows this glory and power of Mine becomes united with Me through unwavering Yoga; of this there is no doubt.

I am the source of all creation; everything proceeds from Me. Knowing this, the wise worship Me with deep feeling.

With their minds fixed on Me and their very life devoted to Me, enlightening one another and always speaking of Me, My devotees find contentment and joy.

To those who are constantly devoted and worship Me with love, I give the understanding by which they can come to Me.

Out of compassion for them, I, dwelling within their hearts, destroy the darkness born of ignorance with the shining lamp of knowledge.

arjuna uvāca. paraṁ brahma paraṁ dhāma pavitraṁ paramaṁ bhavān, puruṣaṁ śāśvataṁ divyam ādidevam ajaṁ vibhum.
Arjuna said: You are the Supreme Brahman, the supreme abode, the supreme purifier, the eternal divine Person, the primal God, unborn and all-pervading.
Life lesson: When gratitude genuinely rises in you today, let it flow into words rather than holding it back.

āhus tvām ṛṣayaḥ sarve devarṣir nāradas tathā, asito devalo vyāsaḥ svayaṁ caiva bravīṣi me.
All the sages declare this of You, as does the divine sage Narada; so too Asita, Devala, and Vyasa, and You Yourself now tell me this.
Life lesson: When something important is confirmed by multiple trusted sources today, let your confidence in it grow.

sarvam etad ṛtaṁ manye yan māṁ vadasi keśava, na hi te bhagavan vyaktiṁ vidur devā na dānavāḥ.
I believe all this that You tell me is true, O Keshava; indeed, O Lord, neither the gods nor the demons know Your true manifestation.

svayam evātmanātmānaṁ vettha tvaṁ puruṣottama, bhūtabhāvana bhūteśa devadeva jagatpate.
You alone know Yourself by Yourself, O Supreme Person, O source of beings, O Lord of beings, O God of gods, O Lord of the universe.
Life lesson: Let go today of needing to fully understand everything—some mysteries deserve reverence, not explanation.

vaktum arhasy aśeṣeṇa divyā hy ātmavibhūtayaḥ, yābhir vibhūtibhir lokān imāṁs tvaṁ vyāpya tiṣṭhasi.
You should describe in full Your divine glories, by which glories You pervade and abide in these worlds.
Life lesson: Let your curiosity about what you believe deepen today, rather than settling for surface-level understanding.

kathaṁ vidyām ahaṁ yogiṁs tvāṁ sadā paricintayan, keṣu keṣu ca bhāveṣu cintyo'si bhagavan mayā.
O Yogi, how shall I come to know You through constant meditation? And in which various states of being should I meditate on You, O Lord?

विस्तरेणात्मनो योगं विभूतिं च जनार्दन । भूयः कथय तृप्तिर्हि शृण्वतो नास्ति मेऽमृतम् ॥
vistareṇātmano yogaṁ vibhūtiṁ ca janārdana, bhūyaḥ kathaya tṛptir hi śṛṇvato nāsti me'mṛtam.
O Janardana, tell me again in detail of Your Yoga and glory, for I am never satiated hearing this nectar-like speech.

śrī bhagavān uvāca. hanta te kathayiṣyāmi divyā hy ātmavibhūtayaḥ, prādhānyataḥ kuruśreṣṭha nāsty anto vistarasya me.
The Supreme Lord said: Well then, O best of the Kurus, I shall tell you of My divine glories, in their prominence, for there is no end to their extent.
Life lesson: Share what you know today, even if it's incomplete—a glimpse of truth still has real value.

अहमात्मा गुडाकेश सर्वभूताशयस्थितः । अहमादिश्च मध्यं च भूतानामन्त एव च ॥
aham ātmā guḍākeśa sarva-bhūtāśaya-sthitaḥ aham ādiś ca madhyaṁ ca bhūtānām anta eva ca
I am the Self, O Gudakesha, seated in the hearts of all beings. I am the beginning, the middle, and the end of all beings.

Among the Adityas, I am Vishnu; among lights, I am the radiant sun; among the Maruts, I am Marichi; among the stars, I am the moon.

vedānāṁ sāma-vedo 'smi devānām asmi vāsavaḥ indriyāṇāṁ manaś cāsmi bhūtānām asmi cetanā
Among the Vedas I am the Samaveda, among the celestial gods I am Indra. Among the senses I am the mind, and in living beings I am consciousness.
Life lesson: Pause today and simply appreciate the fact that you're aware at all — that consciousness itself is something sacred.

rudrāṇāṁ śaṅkaraś cāsmi vitteśo yakṣarakṣasām, vasūnāṁ pāvakaś cāsmi meruḥ śikhariṇām aham.
Among the Rudras, I am Shankara; among the Yakshas and Rakshasas, I am Kubera, the lord of wealth; among the Vasus, I am Agni; among the mountains, I am Meru.
Life lesson: Recognize today that even opposing forces in your life can both point back to the same underlying order.

O Partha, know Me among priests to be their chief, Brihaspati; among generals, I am Skanda; among bodies of water, I am the ocean.

maharṣīṇāṁ bhṛgur ahaṁ girām asmy ekam akṣaram, yajñānāṁ japayajño'smi sthāvarāṇāṁ himālayaḥ.
Among the great sages, I am Bhrigu; among words, I am the single syllable Om; among sacrifices, I am the sacrifice of silent repetition; among immovable things, I am the Himalayas.
Life lesson: Value today's quiet, repeated practices—a simple silent prayer can be as sacred as any grand ritual.

aśvatthaḥ sarvavṛkṣāṇāṁ devarṣīṇāṁ ca nāradaḥ, gandharvāṇāṁ citrarathaḥ siddhānāṁ kapilo muniḥ.
Among trees, I am the sacred fig tree; among divine sages, I am Narada; among celestial musicians, I am Chitraratha; among the perfected beings, I am the sage Kapila.
Life lesson: Look for something sacred today in nature or art, not just in formal prayer.

Know Me among horses to be Uchchaihshravas, born of the nectar of immortality; among lordly elephants, Airavata; and among men, the king.

āyudhānām ahaṁ vajraṁ dhenūnām asmi kāmadhuk, prajanaś cāsmi kandarpaḥ sarpāṇām asmi vāsukiḥ.
Among weapons, I am the thunderbolt; among cows, I am the wish-fulfilling Kamadhenu; I am Kandarpa, the cause of procreation; among serpents, I am Vasuki.
Life lesson: Recognize today that the strength and creativity in your life both flow from the same generous source.

Among serpents, I am Ananta; among aquatic beings, I am Varuna; among ancestors, I am Aryama; among those who administer restraint, I am Yama.

Among the demons, I am Prahlada; among reckoners, I am time; among animals, I am the lion; among birds, I am Garuda.

Among purifiers, I am the wind; among warriors bearing arms, I am Rama; among fish, I am the crocodile; among rivers, I am the Ganga.

O Arjuna, I am the beginning, the middle, and also the end of all creation; among branches of knowledge, I am the knowledge of the self; among debaters, I am their reasoning.

akṣarāṇām a-kāro 'smi dvandvaḥ sāmāsikasya ca aham evākṣayaḥ kālo dhātāhaṁ viśvato-mukhaḥ
Among letters I am the letter A, and among compound words I am the dual; I am also inexhaustible time, and the creator facing every direction.

mṛtyuḥ sarvaharaś cāham udbhavaś ca bhaviṣyatām, kīrtiḥ śrīr vāk ca nārīṇāṁ smṛtir medhā dhṛtiḥ kṣamā.
I am all-devouring death, and also the origin of things yet to be; among feminine qualities, I am fame, prosperity, speech, memory, intelligence, steadfastness, and patience.
Life lesson: Honor the quiet strengths you carry today—memory, patience, steadiness—as genuinely sacred qualities.

बृहत्साम तथा साम्नां गायत्री छन्दसामहम् । मासानां मार्गशीर्षोऽहमृतूनां कुसुमाकरः ॥
bṛhatsāma tathā sāmnāṁ gāyatrī chandasām aham, māsānāṁ mārgaśīrṣo'ham ṛtūnāṁ kusumākaraḥ.
Among hymns, I am the Brihat-sama; among meters, I am the Gayatri; among months, I am Margashirsha; among seasons, I am flower-bearing spring.

dyūtaṁ chalayatām asmi tejas tejasvinām aham, jayo'smi vyavasāyo'smi sattvaṁ sattvavatām aham.
Among gamblers, I am the gambling; among the splendid, I am the splendor; I am victory, I am resolve, I am the goodness of the good.

vṛṣṇīnāṁ vāsudevo'smi pāṇḍavānāṁ dhanañjayaḥ, munīnām apy ahaṁ vyāsaḥ kavīnām uśanā kaviḥ.
Among the Vrishnis, I am Vasudeva; among the Pandavas, I am Arjuna; among sages, I am Vyasa; among poets, I am the poet Ushanas.

daṇḍo damayatām asmi nītir asmi jigīṣatām, maunaṁ caivāsmi guhyānāṁ jñānaṁ jñānavatām aham.
Among those who chastise, I am the rod of punishment; among those who seek victory, I am statesmanship; among secrets, I am silence; among the wise, I am wisdom.

And whatever is the seed of all beings, that too I am, O Arjuna; there is no being, moving or unmoving, that can exist without Me.

nānto'sti mama divyānāṁ vibhūtīnāṁ parantapa, eṣa tūddeśataḥ prokto vibhūter vistaro mayā.
O scorcher of foes, there is no end to My divine glories; what I have spoken is only a brief indication of the extent of My glory.
Life lesson: Stay open today to the idea that whatever you've learned is just a glimpse of something far larger.

yad yad vibhūtimat sattvaṁ śrīmad ūrjitam eva vā tat tad evāvagaccha tvaṁ mama tejo 'ṁśa-sambhavam
Whatever you see that is glorious, beautiful, or powerful, know it to have sprung from just a fraction of My splendor.
Life lesson: When something beautiful catches your eye today, pause a moment longer and sense the deeper splendor it points to.

अथवा बहुनैतेन किं ज्ञातेन तवार्जुन । विष्टभ्याहमिदं कृत्स्नमेकांशेन स्थितो जगत् ॥
atha vā bahunaitena kiṁ jñātena tavārjuna viṣṭabhyāham idaṁ kṛtsnam ekāṁśena sthito jagat
But what need is there, Arjuna, for all this detailed knowledge? Simply know that I support this entire universe with a single fragment of Myself.
Life lesson: You don't need to have it all figured out today — one simple trust, that you're held by something greater, is enough.
