About Palmistry

Palmistry, known in Sanskrit tradition as hasta samudrika shastra, reads the hand — its lines, mounts, shape and proportions. It forms part of the wider samudrika shastra, the traditional study of bodily features.

The major lines

Four lines are read first. The heart line, running below the fingers, is associated with emotion and relationships. The head line below it is read for thinking style. The life line curves around the base of the thumb and is associated with vitality and major changes — not, despite the common belief, with lifespan. The fate line, when present, runs vertically and is associated with career and direction.

Mounts and hand shape

The raised areas at the base of each finger and around the palm are the mounts, each named for a planet — Jupiter, Saturn, Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars — and read for the qualities associated with it. The overall shape of the hand and the relative length of fingers and palm are also taken into account before individual lines are interpreted.

Frequently asked questions

Which hand should be read?
A common convention is that the non-dominant hand shows inherited tendencies and the dominant hand what has been made of them, so readers usually look at both and pay attention to where they differ.
Do the lines on a palm change?
Minor lines do change over years, which is part of why palmistry treats the hand as a description of tendencies rather than a fixed record.
