What Is a Muhurat?
A muhurat is an auspicious window of time chosen for beginning something important — a wedding, moving into a home, starting a business, buying a vehicle. The practice rests on the idea that a beginning carries the character of the moment in which it is made.
What goes into selecting one
A muhurat is selected from the panchang — the five limbs of the traditional almanac: tithi (lunar day), vara (weekday), nakshatra (lunar mansion), yoga and karana. Certain combinations are avoided, and specific nakshatras are preferred for specific activities. For personal events the selection is often checked against the individual's own birth chart as well.
Abhijit muhurat
Abhijit is the roughly 48-minute window around solar noon, and it is widely treated as generally auspicious for beginnings when a more carefully selected muhurat is not available. It is commonly avoided on Wednesdays, and it is not used for certain specific ceremonies.

- A general muhurat can be computed for a place and date from the panchang alone. For weddings and other major personal events, astrologers typically also check the chosen time against the birth charts of those involved.
- What if I cannot act within the muhurat?
- A common practice is to perform a small symbolic beginning within the auspicious window — signing a document, lighting a lamp, carrying in a first item — and complete the rest at a practical time.
