Chapter 6 · Dhyana Yoga

The Steady Flame · An Undisturbed Mind

यथा दीपो निवातस्थो नेङ्गते सोपमा स्मृता । योगिनो यतचित्तस्य युञ्जतो योगमात्मनः ॥

yathā dīpo nivāta-stho neṅgate sopamā smṛtā yogino yata-cittasya yuñjato yogam ātmanaḥ

Meaning

"As a lamp in a windless place does not flicker, so is the disciplined mind of a yogi practicing meditation on the self compared."

Explanation

A steady mind isn't one that never has thoughts pass through — it's one that isn't tossed around by every gust of distraction. That kind of stillness is built quietly, through practice, not force.

Today's Life Lesson

When distractions swirl around you today, picture a windless lamp and let your mind settle into that same steadiness.
