Chapter 6 · Dhyana Yoga

Compassion · Feeling as Others Feel

आत्मौपम्येन सर्वत्र समं पश्यति योऽर्जुन । सुखं वा यदि वा दुःखं स योगी परमो मतः ॥

ātmaupamyena sarvatra samaṁ paśyati yo'rjuna, sukhaṁ vā yadi vā duḥkhaṁ sa yogī paramo mataḥ.

Meaning

"O Arjuna, the yogi who, by comparison with the self, sees the same everywhere—whether in pleasure or in pain—is regarded as supreme."

Explanation

Compassion grows naturally once you truly understand that others feel pain and joy exactly as deeply as you do.

Today's Life Lesson

Before judging someone's pain today, imagine it as your own for a moment.
