Chapter 3 · Karma Yoga

Noticing, Not Obeying · Attraction and Aversion

इन्द्रियस्येन्द्रियस्यार्थे रागद्वेषौ व्यवस्थितौ । तयोर्न वशमागच्छेत्तौ ह्यस्य परिपन्थिनौ ॥

indriyasyendriyasyārthe rāga-dveṣau vyavasthitau tayor na vaśam āgacchet tau hy asya paripanthinau

Meaning

"Attachment and aversion naturally arise toward the objects of each sense; one should not come under their control, for they are obstacles on the path."

Explanation

Liking some things and disliking others isn't the problem — that's just how the senses work. The trouble starts when those instant reactions start steering your choices instead of simply being noticed and let go.

Today's Life Lesson

When a strong like or dislike pulls at you today, notice it without letting it make the decision for you.
