Chapter 17 · Shraddhatraya Vibhaga Yoga

Discipline as Care · Not Deprivation, But Respect

देवद्विजगुरुप्राज्ञपूजनं शौचमार्जवम् । ब्रह्मचर्यमहिंसा च शारीरं तप उच्यते ॥

deva-dvija-guru-prājña-pūjanaṁ śaucam ārjavam brahmacaryam ahiṁsā ca śārīraṁ tapa ucyate

Meaning

"Worship of the divine, the wise, one's teachers, and elders; along with cleanliness, simplicity, celibacy, and non-violence — this is called austerity of the body."

Explanation

Discipline of the body isn't about harsh punishment — it's shown here as respect, cleanliness, simplicity, and gentleness toward all living things. True austerity looks more like care than deprivation.

Today's Life Lesson

Practice bodily discipline today as an act of respect and care — cleanliness and gentleness, not harshness toward yourself.
