Chapter 15 · Purushottama Yoga

Changing and Unchanging · Two Kinds of Being

द्वाविमौ पुरुषौ लोके क्षरश्चाक्षर एव च । क्षरः सर्वाणि भूतानि कूटस्थोऽक्षर उच्यते ॥

dvāv imau puruṣau loke kṣaraś cākṣara eva ca kṣaraḥ sarvāṇi bhūtāni kūṭa-stho 'kṣara ucyate

Meaning

"There are two kinds of beings in this world, the perishable and the imperishable; the perishable is all beings, and the imperishable is called the unchanging."

Explanation

The Gita draws a clean line here between what constantly changes — every living form in this world — and what stays fixed beneath all that change. Knowing which one you're identifying with in any given moment makes a real difference.

Today's Life Lesson

When change unsettles you today, remember to find the part of you that stays steady beneath it — that's what you can lean on.
