Chapter 7 · Jnana Vijnana Yoga

The Building Blocks · Eight Elements of Nature

भूमिरापोऽनलो वायुः खं मनो बुद्धिरेव च । अहङ्कार इतीयं मे भिन्ना प्रकृतिरष्टधा ॥

bhūmir āpo 'nalo vāyuḥ khaṁ mano buddhir eva ca ahaṅkāra itīyaṁ me bhinnā prakṛtir aṣṭadhā

Meaning

"Earth, water, fire, air, space, mind, intellect, and ego — this is My eightfold divided material nature."

Explanation

Krishna maps out the raw ingredients of the entire visible and mental world, from solid earth to the subtle sense of "I." Naming them this plainly is a reminder that even your thoughts and ego are made of something, not some separate untouchable core.

Today's Life Lesson

When your ego reacts strongly to something today, remember it's just one part of a larger nature, not the deepest truth of who you are.
