Chapter 6 · Dhyana Yoga

The Middle Path · Balance in Eating and Rest

नात्यश्नतस्तु योगोऽस्ति न चैकान्तमनश्नतः । न चाति स्वप्नशीलस्य जाग्रतो नैव चार्जुन ॥

nātyaśnatas tu yogo 'sti na caikāntam anaśnataḥ na cāti svapna-śīlasya jāgrato naiva cārjuna

Meaning

"Yoga is not possible for one who eats too much or too little, nor for one who sleeps too much or too little, O Arjuna."

Explanation

Spiritual life isn't built on extremes of self-denial or self-indulgence — it's built on balance. Taking care of the body sensibly turns out to be part of the discipline, not a distraction from it.

Today's Life Lesson

Give your body sensible care today — enough rest, enough food — balance is part of the discipline, not separate from it.
