Chapter 3 · Karma Yoga

The Inner Hierarchy · Resting Beyond the Mind

इन्द्रियाणि पराण्याहुरिन्द्रियेभ्यः परं मनः । मनसस्तु परा बुद्धिर्यो बुद्धेः परतस्तु सः ॥

indriyāṇi parāṇy āhur indriyebhyaḥ paraṁ manaḥ manasas tu parā buddhir yo buddheḥ paratas tu saḥ

Meaning

"The senses are said to be superior to the body, the mind superior to the senses, the intellect superior to the mind, and the soul is even higher than the intellect."

Explanation

There's always a deeper, quieter part of you that can observe even your busiest thoughts. Learning to rest in that observer, rather than getting swept up by every sense impression, is where steadiness is found.

Today's Life Lesson

When your senses or emotions pull hard today, remember there's a quieter, wiser part of you that can simply watch and choose.
