Chapter 2 · Sankhya Yoga

Ocean of Peace · Letting Desires Pass Through

आपूर्यमाणमचलप्रतिष्ठं समुद्रमापः प्रविशन्ति यद्वत् । तद्वत्कामा यं प्रविशन्ति सर्वे स शान्तिमाप्नोति न कामकामी ॥

āpūryamāṇam acala-pratiṣṭhaṁ samudram āpaḥ praviśanti yadvat tadvat kāmā yaṁ praviśanti sarve sa śāntim āpnoti na kāma-kāmī

Meaning

"As rivers flow into the ocean, which remains ever full and undisturbed, so should all desires flow into a person without disturbing their peace — not the one who chases desire after desire."

Explanation

The ocean doesn't refuse the rivers that pour into it, yet it never overflows or loses itself. That's the model here — you don't have to shut desires out; you just need enough inner depth that they stop being able to unsettle you.

Today's Life Lesson

Let today's wants and cravings arrive and pass without letting them stir up your center — depth, not denial, is what keeps you calm.
