Navratri

Navratri

Nine Nights of the Divine Mother

Deity
Goddess Durga in her nine forms (Navadurga)
Duration
9 nights + Vijayadashami
When
Sharad Navratri — bright half of Ashwin (Sept–Oct); Chaitra Navratri — bright half of Chaitra (March–April)

Significance

Navratri celebrates the nine-night battle between Goddess Durga and the buffalo demon Mahishasura, ending with her victory on the tenth morning — Vijayadashami. Each night worships one of her nine forms (Navadurga) — a progressive journey from the innocent daughter of the mountains (Shailaputri) to the granter of all spiritual attainments (Siddhidatri). The nine nights are simultaneously a social celebration and an inner purification.

Rituals & Observances

Ghatasthapana (Day 1)

A small clay pot filled with soil is sown with barley seeds; a kalash is placed on it representing the goddess. The barley sprouts over nine days are considered blessings.

Daily worship of the Navadurga

Each morning a specific form is worshipped — Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kaalratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidatri — with specific flowers and prasad.

Satvic fasting

No grains, no onion, no garlic, only sendha namak; fruit, milk, kuttu flour, samak rice and potatoes are the staples.

Kanya Puja (Day 8 or 9)

Nine young girls representing the nine forms are invited home; their feet are washed, they are fed halwa-puri, and given small gifts.

Durga Visarjan / Vijayadashami (Day 10)

In Bengal, massive idols of Durga are immersed in rivers. In the North, Ravana effigies are burned. The tenth day marks the victory of dharma over every inner demon.

How It Is Celebrated

Regional variety is the soul of Navratri. In Gujarat the nights explode with Garba and Dandiya Raas. In Bengal, entire neighbourhoods install 10-foot-tall clay Durga idols and host public pandals (Durga Puja). In Tamil Nadu homes display Bommai Golu — tiered arrangements of dolls telling stories of the Puranas. In Mysuru, the royal Dasara procession with a golden-howdah elephant draws visitors from across the world. A single festival becomes a thousand festivals — all of them celebrating the same mother.
